Eagles special team coach on Elliott: ‘He has that mindset where he wants the pressure on him’

On Sunday, Philadelphia Eagles kicker Jake Elliott made four field goals, including a 54-yarder in OT to give the Eagles a 34-31 win over the Commanders.

In addition, Elliott became the third kicker in Eagles history to appear in 100-plus career games, joining David Akers (188, 1999-2010) and Bobby Walston (148, 1951-62).

This season, Elliott has been very accurate. He’s made 13/14 field goals, including a season-high 61-yarder in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

The seven-year veteran has made many big kicks, including the biggest in team history in Super Bowl 52, where his hit a 46-yard field goal late in the fourth that helped the Eagles defeat the Patriots.

Eagles special teams coach Michael Clay has been with Elliott since he’s been in the league, and according to Clay, Elliott enjoys the pressure.

“Really, it’s just his mindset going into anything,” Clay said Tuesday. “Really anything Jake does, whether it’s on the football field or in here or in our room, his competitive drive is something that is unmatched, and I’m sure he’s alluded to it when he was playing all those sports in high school and everything. He has that mindset where he wants the pressure on him and he knows he’s going to come through in any given situation, which is awesome.

The 2021 Pro Bowler was drafted in the fifth round in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Bengals, but he was waived at the end of training camp. Ultimately, he would sign with the Eagles. Clay discussed when he realized Elliott was a special player.

“Going back a few years ago now, six years ago I think, coming out of Memphis, I knew he was one of the better kickers coming out,” he said. “I was fortunate enough that we had a kicker out there in San Francisco, but just that competitive drive, and you watch every game from around the league, and you just know, something sticks out when a guy as a rookie against the Giants hits a 61-yarder to win the game, you know there’s something special in that kid. He’s done a great job of just getting better and better as he goes on in his career.”

Elliott has been a weapon for the Eagles this season, and at age 28, he has a lot of life left in his leg.

Eagles sneak by Patriots in season opener

It wasn’t pretty, and it was not a masterpiece, but in the end, the Philadelphia Eagles(1-0) got by the Patriots(0-1) 25-20 at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

The Eagles led 16-0 in the first quarter and held on late.

Here are three observations from Philly’s win over New England.

-Jalen Hurts did not play one of his best games. Hurts was 22/33 for 170 yards and a touchdown and ran for 37 yards; he did have a big fumble, which almost allowed the Patriots to come back late. It’s only one of 17, so you can’t read too much into Hurts’ performance, but the offense did not have much of a rhythm.

-Eagles rookie DT Jalen Carter looks like a special talent, and he recorded his first career sack late in the fourth. On his first defensive snap, he got a hit on Mac Jones. Philadelphia may have gotten the steal of the draft.

-Jake Elliott is a weapon. He made all four of his field goal attempts, including 56 and 51-yard field goals. Elliott has made two 50-plus-yard field goals in the same game for the second time in his career. He did miss an extra point, but he made up for it.

The Eagles don’t win this game without the play of Elliott.

Conclusion:

Again, there was not much great from the Eagles, but these are the games good teams find ways to win. Going forward, you expect Hurts and the offense to be better. He was under duress at times in this game and was sacked three times, but it’s only one game, so you expect things to get better for this offense and team.

Notes:

Jalen Hurts has won 18 of his last 19 regular-season starts.

The Eagles made it a 10-0 score in the first quarter when Darius Slay intercepted Patriots QB Mac Jones and returned it 70 yards for a TD. It was the longest pick-6 of Slay’s career. The takeaway was his 3rd career INT-TD, having previously done so on 11/21/21 vs. New Orleans (51 yards) and 12/9/18 at Arizona with Detroit (61 yards).

Nick Sirianni is 3-0 in season openers for his Eagles career, all on the road.

Eagles LB Nakobe Dean left in the second half with a foot injury and did not return.

Six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady was honored at halftime by the Patriots.

Week 18: Williams, Jeudy, Diggs, Hines headline NFL Players of the Week

On Wednesday, the NFL announced that Lions running back Jamaal Williams, Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs, and Eagles kicker Jake Elliott were name NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played in Week 18.

OFFENSE: RB JAMAAL WILLIAMS, DETROIT LIONS

Williams rushed for 72 yards and two second-half touchdowns, including the go-ahead touchdown with under six minutes remaining in the Lions’ 20-16 win at Green Bay on Sunday Night Football. He led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns this season and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders (16 rushing touchdowns in 1991) for the most in a season in franchise history.

DEFENSE: S QUANDRE DIGGS, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Diggs recorded an interception in overtime and added four tackles in the Seahawks’ 19-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams. It marked the fifth overtime interception in the NFL this season

SPECIAL TEAMS: K JAKE ELLIOTT, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Elliott converted all five of his field goal attempts – from 32, 52, 39, 54 and 22 yards – and led all kickers in scoring (16 points) in Week 18 as the Eagles defeated the New York Giants, 22-16.

AFC Players of the Week:

In the AFC, Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, Jaguars linebacker Josh Allen, and Bills running back/KR Nyheim Hines were named AFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week.

OFFENSE: WR JERRY JEUDY, DENVER BRONCOS

Jeudy led all players and set career highs in receiving yards (154) and scrimmage yards (193) during Week 18 as the Broncos defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, 31-28.

DEFENSE: LB JOSH ALLEN, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Allen recorded six tackles, one tackle for loss, one forced fumble and recorded the game-winning 37-yard fumble-return for a touchdown with 2:51 remaining in the Jaguars’ 20-16 win over Tennessee. Jacksonville completed the “worst-to-first” turnaround and clinched the AFC South division title for the first time since 2017.

SPECIAL TEAMS: RB NYHEIM HINES, BUFFALO BILLS

Hines recorded two kickoff-return touchdowns (96- and 101-yards) in the Bills’ 35-23 win over the Patriots in Week 18 as he became the first player since Leon Washington (Week 3, 2010) with two kickoff-return touchdowns in the same game.

Eagles special teams coach has high praise for Dicker

One of the heroes of the Eagles’ big win in Arizona over the Cardinals was K Cameron Dicker, who, in his first NFL game, made two extra points and two field goals, including the game-winning 23-yard field goal to keep the Eagles undefeated.

Dicker, who played in place of an injured Jake Elliott(ankle), is an undrafted rookie free agent out of Texas and was added to the Eagles practice squad last week.

The 22-year-old was composed on Sunday, and the Eagles don’t defeat the Cardinals without him.

According to Eagles special teams coach Michael Clay, Dicker was cool and calm in practice last week.

“He was out there Thursday with the field goal unit. He was calm, cool, collected,” Clay said on Tuesday. “Regardless of the situation, I thought [K Cameron] Cam [Dicker] did an excellent job throughout the week of practice getting prepared for it.

“Then come Saturday and Sunday, you talk to him, and he’s just very cool like he doesn’t go high or low. So, it was actually really cool to see him go out there and perform like he did.

“It’s kudos to him, kudos to the field goal unit, the operation. [Special Teams Quality Control coach] Tyler Brown working with him and just getting him comfortable. You see, after all those PATs and field goals, the guys on kickoff all dapping him up, which was really cool to see. A guy that people had known for three days gets the help from everybody else, which was really cool to see.”

If healthy, Elliott is one of the best kickers in football, and we’ll see if Elliott can return on Sunday night against the Cowboys. However, if he can’t, well, they do have a calm, cool, and collected kicker in Dicker.

Eagles’ Fipp on Elliott: ‘He’s had some short misses there; it’s unacceptable for us’

Philadelphia Eagles K Jake Elliott was one of the heroes of Super Bowl 52. Elliott made three field goals in that contest, including a 46-yarder that put the Eagles up 41-33 late in the game. Ultimately, as we know, Philadelphia would hold on and defeat the Patriots on that day.

Before this season, the 25-year-old Elliott had been a very consistent kicker for the Eagles and was rewarded with a five-year, $21 million contract extension last November, but one year later, Elliott is floundering. In 13 games this season, Elliott has missed five field goals(13-18), including a 22-yarder last week in the team’s win over New Orleans.

On Tuesday, Eagles special teams coach Dave Fipp talked about Elliott’s struggles in 2020.

“Obviously, the last three weeks, he’s had some short misses there. It’s unacceptable for us. He knows that I know that,” Fipp said… “I mean, I have to do a better job with him just working our fundamentals, our techniques, our drills. We had a good snap, a good hold. I think the operation has been really good for him. He’s obviously made a bunch of longer kicks, so some of it is hard to fathom. At the end of the day, I’m not going to get into all the techniques and detail, but it comes down to just striking the ball more consistently. We got to get him in a little bit better rhythm and make sure he’s striking the ball a little bit more consistently there.

“He’s a talented player; he’s got a lot of tools, he’s a really talented player, he works really hard at it. It’s really important to him, it’s not a lack of effort or of a want to, so we’ll just stay the course. I think any player in that position in this league or most players in that position in this league have had to fight through something. This will be a good opportunity for him to fight through a little adversity here.”

Elliott has to be better going forward for the Eagles. In reality, no one cares about the kicker until they have to care about the kicker, and that usually happens when the kicker is struggling, and at this time, Elliott is struggling. It’s hard to understand why, but hopefully, Fipp can find ways to help Elliott turn it around. Otherwise, Philadelphia may have a decision to make at the kicker position.

Jake Elliott hits 61-yard field goal at the buzzer; Eagles beat Giants 27-24

Eagles rookie K Jake Elliott will be a hero in Philadelphia this week.

With the Eagles and Giants tied at 24, Elliott lined up for a 61-yard field goal.

Here is how it looked:

Elliott, who was a fifth-round pick by the Bengals, was signed off the Bengals’ practice squad after an injury to Eagles K Caleb Sturgis in Week 1.
