After spending 12 years in prison, for armed robbery and assault, middleweight Vaughn Alexander(7-0, 5 KOs) is trying to make up for lost time. The chance to make up for lost time comes Saturday against Andres Calixto Rey(14-3, 9) at the Mohegan Sun resort in Connecticut.
The 31-year old Alexander is the older brother of former IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander. Vaughn Alexander was considered by some to be more talented than his brother Devon. “Vaughn was a better fighter than Devon,” said Vaughn and Devon’s former promoter Don King back in 2010
Originally, Alexander-Rey was going to be a eight-round fight on the non-televised portion of the HBO Latino card, but due to the cancellation of Arif Magomedev’s fight with Elias Espadas(Magomedev’s illness). Alexander-Rey will now be a 10-round fight, and it will be the co-feature on HBO Latino.
The St. Louis native believes he will impress. “I am just one step closer to taking over this middleweight division. I am ready to fight whoever, wherever. I am ready to go to war,” Alexander said at the pre-fight press conference. “I am going to put on a display.”
In the main event, Sullivan Barrera will fight Paul Parker in a 10-round light heavyweight bout. The HBO Latino Boxing telecast begins at 11:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT)
